State Teacher of the Year Honored
at White House in Washington DC

(Santa Fe, NM)—Today, Nancy Schick, New Mexico’s State Teacher of the Year, was honored in a ceremony with President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush at the White House. All State Teachers of the Year as well as the National Teacher of the Year, Jason Kamras, a middle-school math teacher from the District of Columbia, were celebrating their achievements with the President and the First Lady as well as other dignitaries including Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings and New Mexico’s Secretary of Education, Veronica C. García.

Nancy Schick teaches history at Los Alamos High School where she has taught social studies for 17 years. She was named the 2005 New Mexico "Teacher of the Year" at an awards banquet on October 20, 2004.
Nancy remarked, “I am so honored to represent the State of New Mexico as State Teacher of the Year and promote education throughout the State. I am pleased with the choice of Jason Kamras as National Teacher of the Year, his advocacy is inspiring and I hope to be able to do more in New Mexico in my role as State Teacher of the Year.”

Secretary Veronica C. García said, “I am so proud of Nancy Schick and of all the fine teachers we have working to improve education in New Mexico. Being here at the National Teacher of the Year award ceremony, it is clear that teaching is not a job; it is a calling. Nancy’s passion for excellence is contagious. It was an honor for me to be surrounded by so many outstanding teachers from around the country. I look forward to providing opportunities for innovative teachers like Nancy to share best practices with other teachers at our Closing the Achievement Gap Conference in Albuquerque tomorrow.”
