Public Education Department Hosts Two Important Meetings Addressing Needs of Native American Students November 3rd and 4th in Mescalero

 

(Santa Fe, NM)— The New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) will host two important meetings this week that will address Native American student issues and also discuss the implementation of the Indian Education Act.  The purpose of the meetings is to get feedback from tribal leaders on the progress of the NMPED in meeting the needs of Native American students in public schools.  
 
The Government to Government meeting is scheduled on Thursday, November 3, 2005 at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Mescalero, New Mexico from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.   The New Mexico Indian Education Advisory Council will meet on Friday, November 4, 2005 at the Inn of the Mountain Gods in Mescalero from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

 

 

Agenda items for Thursday’s Government to Government meeting include:

1.      Opening Remarks by Education Secretary Dr. Veronica C. García

2.      Indian Education Act Implementation Report by NMPED Assistant Secretary Penny Bird

3.      Health Issues Report by Dr. Kristine Meurer, NMPED Program Manager for School Health Bureau

4.      Indian Education Legislative Recommendations by Dr, Larry Emerson
